Jesus Anointed With Perfume

Lesson: A woman did something unusual to show her gratitude to Jesus for forgiving her mistakes.

Memory Verse: Ephesians 1:7 He is so rich in kindness and grace that he purchased our freedom with the blood of his Son and forgave our sins.

Key Points:

  • Jesus had dinner at the house of a pharisee. Luke 7:36-37

  • A sinful lady came in and anointed Jesus’ feet with perfume. Luke 7:38

  • Jesus told a parable to prove a point. Luke 7:41-43

  • When Jesus forgives, you love him back!

In today’s lesson, we’re going to learn about a time a woman did something shocking to Jesus. Jesus was having dinner with a guy named Simon. Simon was a pharisee. Pharisees were the religious leaders who knew God’s law really well but didn’t think they needed Jesus. A woman found out that Jesus was at Simon’s house and she went to see him. She didn’t greet him with a hug or a high five. She cried and kneeled at his feet. As she cried, she wiped her tears on Jesus’ feet with her hair and she poured perfume on Jesus’ feet. Simon was shocked at what she was doing and told Jesus that she was a sinful woman who had done a lot of bad things in her life. Jesus shouldn’t let her touch him. To teach Simon an important lesson, Jesus told a story. Two men owed a guy money. One owed $500 and the other $50. The guy decided to forgive both debts. Jesus asked Simon which guy would appreciate the guy more- the one who owed little or the one who owed a lot? Simon answered it would be the guy who owed more money. Jesus then explained that this is how the woman felt. She had made a lot of mistakes in her life and knew she needed a lot of forgiveness. She was thankful for Jesus.
